Camped near present-day Coalville in 1858, immigrants saw mature wheat where a grain bag had spilled the previous year. A supply center for farmers, the town was originally named Chalk Creek, but the name was changed when Thomas Rhoades discovered coal. Summit County's Courthouse in Coalville, was built from native sandstone.
Coalville is a small town in eastern Summit County. Coalville is the county seat of Summit County and is the location of our beautifully restored courthouse. We are the gateway to many outdoor sports, both summer and winter. The Echo and Rockport reservoirs are close by for summer water sports and fishing. The first weekend in June, the Business Association of Coalville sponsors a Fishing Derby', with prizes galore. We have a rail trail path that runs from the Echo Reservoir through Coalville and on to Park City. It is a great place to walk or ride your bike - or horse. In July, Coalville hosts the third largest car show in the state of Utah. In August, there is always the County Fair with a demolition derby, rodeos, parade, Jr. Livestock show and sale, home and fine arts.
